Our New Search Engine Comparison Site is Here!

There are more ways to search than just Google, and by simply switching your search engine, your searches could make a real difference to some worthwhile causes. There are quite a few search engines that donate to charity, so we’ve put together some key information about them and their features and how they compare to SearchScene on our new comparison site.

SearchScene

Here at SearchScene, we give 95% of the profits we make from search ads to causes that help to combat climate change, such as Eden Reforestation Projects, Oxfam, UNHCR, UNICEF, WaterAid and WWF.

SearchScene uses Microsoft Bing, enhanced with our own algorithms and data from other sources to provide a high-quality search experience that most other charitable search engines are missing. SearchScene also allows users to select which charities they want their search revenue to be donated to.

Ecosia

Ecosia is ‘the search engine that plants trees’ and, so far, they have planted over 130 million trees across the world in the places that need them the most. They put their profits towards tree-planting projects and their aim is to reach 1 billion trees planted.

Ecosia’s servers are run on 200% renewable energy and every search made through Ecosia removes 1kg of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Ecosia also publishes monthly financial reports so that users can see how the money generated from ads is being spent.

YouCare

YouCare is ‘the search engine that funds good deeds’ and they donate 80% of their profits to these good deeds. They cover a range of different areas, such as planting coral reefs, donating drinking water to disadvantaged populations, giving meals to animal shelters and donating to cancer treatment research.

They also compensate for the CO2 emissions of their servers and transportation by planting trees with the Eden Reforestation Projects organisation.

OceanHero

OceanHero’s mission is to combat ocean pollution, a problem that currently sees 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic floating in an area known as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is larger than Texas.

OceanHero is helping to combat this problem by putting around 50% of their advertising revenue towards the removal of ocean-bound plastic. For every 5 searches that are conducted through their search engine, they remove 1 plastic bottle from the ocean or land.

They work with Plastic Bank to pay people from impoverished communities in exchange for collecting ocean-bound plastic for them, so they are not just helping the ocean, but people in need too!

Lilo

Lilo.org is a French-based search engine that uses 50% of advertising revenue to fund environmental and social projects of the user’s choosing, such as Sea Shepherd France, Doctors of the World, Arutam Zero Deforestation and the Little Princes Association. Over 3 million Euros have already been donated to worthy causes through the use of Lilo.

Ekoru

Like OceanHero, Ekoru’s focus is on saving the oceans by using revenue generated by searches to remove garbage from the sea. 60% of the revenue generated by searches on Ekoru is donated to Big Blue Ocean Cleanup, who remove plastic from the oceans and Operation Posidonia who replant seagrass into the ocean floor, which can capture carbon 40 times faster than tropical rainforests.

WhaleSlide

WhaleSlide is a slightly different charitable search engine in that they don’t use adverts to make their donations. Instead, WhaleSlide has partnered retailers who pay a portion of any sales they make from users back to WhaleSlide. Up to 10% of the money spent on these purchases go towards charities such as War Child, the Bhamala Water Project, Book Aid International and Trees for Life.

We are fortunate to have a choice of many great search engines that are helping to make the world a better place by donating to worthy causes without users having to change the way they search.
