Editor's Review:

Savoo Search is the web search box on the popular UK-based voucher search engine Savoo.co.uk. This review will focus exclusively on the web search functionality of Savoo. Savoo donate 50% of their advertising revenue to charity, which approximates to 1p per search, on average. Over 300 charities are listed, but these are all mainly UK-based charities, which, apart from a handful of the featured charities, you may not have heard of. You will need to register an account with Savoo to support a charity. The search results are powered by Bing, but do not contain all the rich-content and features that Bing provide.

Charities Supported:

Savoo Search supports over 300 UK-based charities, the most famous of which are Against Breast Cancer, Alzheimer's Research UK, Carers UK, Children with Cancer UK, The Children's Society, Diabetes UK, Marie Curie, Mind, RSPCA, Save The Children, Age UK and Shelter. A full list of the supported charities can be found here. You can locate your desired charity by using the search box at the top of the page or by browsing by category. 21 categories of charities are listed, including conservation, animals & pets, cancer, children & youth, environment, health & disabilities, older people, international aid, and so on. You can click on any charity to view more information about that charity, as well as the total amount that has been raised by Savoo for that charity so far. In order to support a charity, you will need to register an account with Savoo. If you do not choose a charity to support, then any advertising revenue you accrue for Savoo by using their search engine will go towards Savoo's charity of the week.

How does this compare with other charitable search engines? The charities on offer are a mix of well-known and not so well-known charities, and having over 300 charities listed can make it hard to decide which charity to support, unless you came here with a specific charity in mind that you wanted to support. Also, the donation of 50% (or roughly 1p per search on average) is pretty standard, but there are charitable search engines that will donate a much higher percentage to charity, notably Ecosia (at 80% donation) and SearchScene (at 95%).

Search Experience:

The Savoo Search experience is not bad but not great either. Search results are mainly powered by Bing, as with so many other charitable search engines we've reviewed, and so you will get relevant, up-to-the minute search results. You will also get some rich content in the form of up to 5 image thumbnails (2 or 3 on mobile) and up to 5 video results (with thumbnails) embedded in your search results. This is better than some charity search engines that don't offer any rich content at all, but not as good as others that offer a carousel of up to 20 image thumbnails and video thumbnails that are relevant to your search results. Seemingly absent from the Savoo search results are top news stories with accompanying thumbnails, which Bing provide to their search partners but which Savoo have apparently chosen not to implement. Also absent from the search results is a knowledge panel, which you would often find on other search engines. A knowledge panel is often found to the right side of the main web search results and contains additional information about your search query, usually taken from Wikipedia or other sources such as Facebook or IMDB, along with more images, etc. We were also disappointed to find that dedicated image searches, video searches and news searches are missing from the search results - these are often found as separate tabs along the top of the search results pages on other search engines. All in all, Savoo have done an OK job at assembling and displaying Bing's search results, but they could have done better and they haven't gone out of their way to add any additional content, such as Wikipedia content. All of this and more can be found in some of our top-rated charitable search engines.

Privacy:

Savoo Search use your device’s unique identifier, IP address, location information, device make/model, wireless provider, and related information, along with other data, to deliver content, services, and advertising tailored to your location. Your search queries are stored in a cookie on your machine, but it is not clear whether Savoo also store your search queries on their servers and for how long. Unlike most other charitable search engines we've reviewed, Savoo use Google Analytics for tracking purposes, which is arguably the most widespread and pervasive type of analytics software available on the web. This means that Google will be able to see your IP address and all the searches you made on the site. Within the European Economic Area, Google will anonymise the last octet of your IP address, but outside of this area, this is unlikely to happen and Google are likely to store your IP address in full. Apart from that, Savoo will obviously have to supply your IP address and search query to the underlying search engine, in this case Bing, and so Bing will also have a record of your search results and unique IP address. Put it all together and Savoo have the least friendly privacy policy out of all the charitable search engines we've reviewed, but - if you're used to using Google - this probably wouldn't worry you that much anyway!

Eco-Credentials:

Beyond the ability to support some environmental charities with your searches, we could not find any specific eco-credentials for Savoo.

Browser Extensions:

We could not locate any browser extensions for Savoo on Chrome, Firefox or Edge browsers at the time of writing this review.

We get the feeling that the web search part of Savoo was a bit of an afterthought and was implemented rather half-heartedly.

Conclusion:

Savoo Search is part of the larger Savoo site which focuses on providing users with voucher codes for a huge range of UK-based stores. We get the feeling that the web search part of Savoo was a bit of an afterthought and was implemented rather half-heartedly. The web search is powered by Bing and so gives relevant, up-to-date search results, and it includes a limited number of thumbnail images to make it all look a bit more engaging, but Savoo could have done so much more with their search results by adding more image thumbnails, and adding additional information beyond that which is supplied by Bing, e.g. by adding a knowledge panel full of really useful, additional information on your search query. Surprisingly, we could not find a dedicated image search, video search or news search feature on the site either. All of this and more is available from some of our top ranked charitable search engines, such as SearchScene and Ecosia.

The charities supported number over 300, so you are sure to find a charity here that interests you. By adding a search box and splitting all the charities into categories, Savoo have made it as easy as possible to locate the charity of your choice. However, if you didn't come here with a particular charity in mind, then finding one to support from the list of over 300 (mostly not-so-well-known) charities will be a difficult task. The charities are mostly UK-based, as the site is geared towards UK users, but there are some international charities listed here too. A charitable donation of 50% (or roughly 1p per search) is pretty standard for this category, but you will find that your searches go further with some of our top ranked charitable search engines, notably Ecosia (at 80% donation) and SearchScene (at 95% donation).
